A skirt for me

Just a really quick post, seeing as it's so late. But I just had to show you all the skirt I've been working on today, this time for me. It is a symbolic skirt, as it represents a lot of firsts - the first time I've drafted my own pattern; the first time I've sewn in a zip; the first time I've made pleats; the first time I've sewn in interfacing.

I still have to hem it, but, look how pretty!! And it fits quite nicely, too. :) Because of the difference in size between my waist and my hips, skirts never fit me right. They always seem to fit on the hips, but are massively too big on my waist. So I forever look lumpy and frumpy lol. But this skirt (obviously because it's made to my measurements) sits nicely on my hips and is only a little bit too big on my waist (more my sewing technique than pattern errors, methinks.

Here is a close up of the zip I put in. I surprised myself with how neat I managed to make it!! The directions were from a book I got for my birthday from my little sister, called Sew What! Skirts. The finished length once it's been hemmed will be just a smidge above the knee. And yes, the material is indeed another Laura Ashley fabric!! Part of my birthday gift from good old mum.

Oh, I'm so proud of my achievement!! Just wanted to brag. :)

It looks great. I have that book and have made quite a few A-line skirts. It's a really god book.

Well done!! That is a lovely skirt, and it's great when you can make them fit you properly.
You will have to make something pretty for Moomin too! How old is she, as I have some patterns somewhere, and if they're the right size you could have them. Let me know.

Happy sewing : )

If you can let me know your address by e-mail, I will hunt them out for you. Mine is funkymum_007@hotmail.co.uk. I don't want anything for them. Some of them may be for girls a little older than Moomin, but I should see when I find them.

Making a skirt is a fantastic achievement. I would be scared to attempt it let alone put in a zip!!!

Thank you! I just had a brain wave one day that I could make them. I hadn't a clue so I made it up as I went along. I'm thrilled to bits with them! I wouldn't even begin to know how to make a skirt though! :-)

I think that's where I'm going wrong, I really cannot follow written instructions. I have to have someone show me or just figure it out through trial and error. I think you have done brilliantly!

Hi Gemma, Have posted the patterns, so hope you get them soon.
As for the bargains from the pound shops, well I didn't go in very often at all, but after finding the first little hook rack, and now the soap holder, I'm thinking it may be a good idea to keep my eyes peeled!
Have a quick look, you never know!!

Keep warm : )
